Ukrainian movie ’20 days in Mariupol’ became the winner of Oscar 2024 as the best documentary feature film.
The film was directed by Mstyslav Chernov, Michelle Mizner and Raney Aronson-Rath.
’20 days in Mariupol’ is the first Ukrainian movie to win the Oscar award.
The documentary tells about the siege of Mariupol by Russian troops in 2022. As a full-scale Russian invasion begins, a team of journalists trapped in the besieged Mariupol struggles to continue their work documenting the tragedies of war.
During the ceremony, Mstyslav Chernov said he wished the film had never been made.
’Probably I will be the first director on this stage who will say I wish I’d never made this film. I wish to be able to exchange this to Russia never attacking Ukraine, never occupying our cities,’ Chernov said.
On October 6, the Administrative Cassation Court within the Supreme Court of Ukraine continued hearing case No. 990/80/25, in which the fifth President and leader of the party “European Solidarity”, Petro Poroshenko, seeks to have Presidential Decree No. 81/2025 from February 12, 2025 — enacting sanctions by the decision of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) — declared illegal and annulled. The plaintiff claims the document was falsified and that the sanctions are a tool of political persecution of the opposition, contrary to international norms. Government representatives deny the allegations and insist their actions were lawful. Journalists of Bukvy were present at the hearing.
