Ukrainian prisoner of war Oleksandr Ishchenko, a driver for the “Azov” Brigade, has died in a detention center in Rostov-on-Don, Russia, according to Russian authorities.
The announcement was made during a session of the Southern District Military Court, which is handling the case of Ishchenko and 23 other members of the “Azov” Brigade.
The court has not yet received documents confirming Ishchenko’s death, and the exact date and cause of death remain unknown.
Oleksandr Ishchenko, 55, joined the “Azov” Brigade’s territorial defense unit in February 2022 as a military driver. He was captured by Russian forces following the fall of Mariupol and was charged alongside 23 other Ukrainians.
The Ukrainian faced charges of “participation in a terrorist organization” and “attempted violent seizure of power,” accusations deemed illegal by his defenders.
