Former Ukrainian president warned the Western allies should be wary of Putin’s real intentions during a panel discussion at the International Democrat Union Forum in Washington. The Ukrainian politician is making rounds in the US drummin up support for Kyiv amid speculations about possible peaceful settlement with Russia over Ukraine.
“Putin doesn’t just want Crimea, Donbas, Zaporizhzhia, or Kherson. He seeks to rebuild either the Soviet Union or a Russian Empire 2.0. Without Ukraine, that’s impossible,” Poroshenko asserted.
He put to doubt the idea Russia seeks negotiations in earnest and dismissed calls to pressure Ukraine into talks. claiming that the Kremlin “feeds on our fears.”
Another narrative Russia is trying to exploit is Ukraine’s fatigue, which Putin wants to emplify through missile strikes targeting civilians and critical infrastructure.
“Their offensive operations have intensified after the U.S. elections, and Putin’s losses are at record levels. We cannot waste time, territory, or lives. To make Ukraine stronger, we need cutting-edge weapons, including air defense systems, electronic warfare tools, drones, and advanced technologies,” he emphasized.
Poroshenko cautioned against growing “Ukraine fatigue” in Europe, equating it to fatigue with freedom and democracy. He urged allies to view assistance to Ukraine as an investment in their own security.
“Think of this as an investment in your own safety. This is not charity; this is not aid. It’s an investment in your security. Let’s do this together,” Poroshenko urged.
