A year ago Russia blew up the Kakhovka dam

On June 6, 2023, the Russian occupation troops blew up the Kakhovka hydro power plant in Kherson region, committing yet another war crime in Ukraine and an act of ecocide.

Nova Kakhovka and the power plant were occupied by the Russian troops at the beginning of the full-scale invasion.

Information that the Russians may be preparing to blow up the Kakhovka dam began to appear in the media as early as the fall of 2022. Ukrainian intelligence, in particular, reported that the dam had been mined by the Russians in April 2022.

On June 6, 2023, at 2:35 am and 2:54 am, seismic sensors in Ukraine and Romania detected signs of powerful explosions, and U.S. reconnaissance satellites equipped with infrared sensors detected signs of heat consistent with a large explosion in the area of ​​the Kakhovka dam.

The engine room and a large part of the dam were destroyed by the explosions. The waters of the Dnipro began to flow from the destroyed reservoir and flooded the surrounding settlements. In total, about 80 settlements in the region, including Kherson, were in the flood zone.

According to official data, 33 people died, 28 were injured, and more than 40 were missing as a result of the blowing up the dam.
