Ukraine has seen a noticeable drop in weddings and a rise in divorces in the first half of 2024, according to an Opendatabot report issued on Friday. The findings reveal a dramatic change in relationship dynamics across the war-torn country.

The number of marriages plummeted by 15% in the first six months of 2024, with only 72,766 unions recorded. This alarming decline comes after a surge in wedding ceremonies during the “wedding boom” of 2022. The current numbers are even lower than those before the full-scale war began.

By contrast, divorce rates have surged, with 15,500 separations registered, marking a 50% increase from last year and an 18% rise compared to the same period in 2021. Kyiv tops the charts with 2,118 divorces, followed by Dnipropetrovsk (1,404) and Kharkiv (1,148).

Interestingly, while marriages are on the decline, prenuptial agreements are seeing a rise. So far this year, 3,768 prenuptial contracts have been notarized—25% more than in the previous year.

The most weddings were held in Kyiv (9,392), Dnipropetrovsk (7,000), and Odesa (4,800), despite the overall decrease in marriage rates.
