High Council of Justice dismisses judge after she was found to have Russian passport

The High Council of Justice of Ukraine has dismissed Lyudmyla Arestova, a judge of the Donetsk District Administrative Court, after she was found to be a holder of Russian citizenship. Arestova reportedly applied for a Russian passport in 2014 after Moscow’s “treaty on the accession of Crimea to Russia’ ruled Ukrainian residents of the occupied peninsula are “automatically recognized” as Russian citizens unless they explicitly refused.
The uncomfortable revelations by Skhemy report eventually made High Council of Justice vote for Arestova’s dismissal.
In August, its disciplinary chamber suspended Arestova from her judicial duties and recommended her removal although the disgraced judge vehemently denied she has Russian citizenship.
“The High Council of Justice decided to dismiss Lyudmyla Arestova from her position as a judge of the Donetsk District Administrative Court under Article 126, Part 6, Clause 3 of the Constitution of Ukraine,” said HCJ Chairman Hryhorii Usyk announcing the verdict during the court session on Tuesday.
