Ukraine is now among only five nations worldwide capable of deploying laser weaponry, according to Colonel Vadym Sukharevskyi, Commander of the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ Drone Systems.

Speaking at the European Defense Industry: Prospects for Cooperation with Ukrainian Defense Industry conference, he revealed that Kyiv has developed a laser weapon called “Trident”.

Sukharevskyi was understanably brief giving the technical specifications of the new weapon:
“With this laser, we can shoot down aircraft at altitudes exceeding 2 kilometers.”

Ukraine’s Armed Forces are not stopping at lasers. Sukharevskyi also said Ukraine is developing a system of drone swarm mothership that can operate and deploy lightweight attack drones over distances greater than 70 kilometers. These “mothership” drones act as relays and deliver precision strikes on enemy targets deep within their territory.

“In my view, this is truly a breakthrough,” he added.

Sukharevskyi also spoke about the Drone Systems Command arguing that over the last 6 months the Ukrainian military have established both combat and research units capable of addressing threats across air, land, and water domains.
