An unusual event unfolded on the Toretsk front as an Egyptian mercenary recruited by Russian forces surrendered to the Ukrainian military.
The 28th Mechanized Brigade said it happened during one of the latest Russian assaults, which, the soldiers said, resembled the earlier battles with Wagner mercenaries.
“When smaller enemy groups failed to break through, they started sending larger assault teams of up to 20 fighters. This wasn’t successful either—it only increased their losses,” the brigade explained.
Under the cover of fog, a Russian assault group tried to ambush Ukrainian positions. However, the 2nd Mechanized Battalion infantry spotted them and responded with fire.
The attackers tried to flee, hide, and even pretended to be dead but were located and taken out by the brigade’s Drone Systems Battalion.
One of the enemy soldiers surrendered and was later identified as an Egyptian national. The language barrier made Ukrainian soldiers use gestures to communicate with the captive.
“He chose to surrender and it saved his life,” a brigade representative noted.
