Petro Poroshenko’s opposition “European Solidarity” MPs said on Wednesday they support the Rome Statute ratification as it is part of Ukraine’s commitments under the Association Agreement with the European Union. However, given the ongoing war, the opposition lawmakers believe Ukraine should put its full ratification until the the martial law is lifted to protect Ukraine’s servicemen from possible prosecution.

It their statement on social media, “European Solidarity” lawmakers said that it would be a ‘mistake’ to go ahead without a”thorough analysis” of possible ramifications, arguing the ratification doesn’t set strict deadlines for this action, which allows some delay.

“It is clear that ratifying this document could open the door for Russia and its allies to fabricate numerous fake cases against Ukraine’s military leadership. Russia has significant resources, a vast network of agents, and expertise in fabricating cases, influencing public opinion, and indirectly swaying court decisions,” the statement reads.

The opposition MPs argue that a rushed and “poorly thought-out actions” could hurt morale of Ukrainians troops.

“We believe that the government should avoid taking steps that could demotivate the military. Even the fear that Ukrainian soldiers might be handed over to the International Criminal Court could undermine their morale. Hasty and poorly thought-out actions pose additional risks to those who are already risking their lives for Ukraine every day.”
