German chancellor Olaf Scholz makes surprise visit to Kyiv
Source: TagesschauIn a bid to show solidarity to Ukraine, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz arrived in Kyiv early on December 2 for an unannounced visit. His arrival – hours after another Russian drone attack on Ukraine’s capital – is set to send a message of Germany’s support for Ukraine as it continues to resist Russian aggression.
In his post on X, Scholz stressed that Berlin is committed to standing by Ukraine in its time of need.
“Ukraine can rely on us. We mean what we say and do what we promise. To reaffirm this, I arrived in Kyiv tonight: traveling by train through a country that has been defending itself against Russian aggression for more than 1,000 days,” wrote the chancellor in his caption to the post.
Later in the day, he will have talks with Zelensky.
The unannounced visit comes at at time when the German leader’s party is facing a tough time back at home after he called a snap election.
