On January 2, Ukraine celebrates the Day of Unity, dedicated to the unification of Ukraine, which took place in 1919.
On this day in 1919, the Unification Act of the Ukrainian People’s Republic and the Western Ukrainian People’s Republic into a single Ukrainian state was signed.
The agreement was aimed at creating a unified Ukrainian state. The unification action of 1919 left a deep mark in the historical memory of the Ukrainian people.
On 21 January 1990, to mark the 71st anniversary of the signing of the Unification Act, over 300,000 Ukrainians created a human chain approximately 300 miles long from Kyiv to Lviv.
In 1999, the Day of Unity of Ukraine became the official holiday.
